BREAKFAST, the innovative new media artist based in Brooklyn, has unveiled the latest kinetic art sculpture on Royal Caribbean’s new ship, Icon of the Seas. Named “The Pearl,” this sculpture is now acknowledged as the world’s largest kinetic art piece, seamlessly blending art and technology.

With dimensions spanning 14 meters in length and a diameter of 15.3 meters, The Pearl comprises nearly 3,000 computer-driven kinetic tiles. Its impressive size is complemented by its ability to authentically capture the ocean’s essence. The sculpture skillfully replicates natural occurrences like rolling waves, gentle breezes, shooting stars, and the dynamic ocean surface. Inspired by the sea, the tiles follow a Fibonacci sequence, mirroring patterns found in marine life.

The uniqueness of this artwork lies in its integration of data from nature. The sculpture’s movements are shaped by real-time tidal and wind data from the Caribbean, obtained through online sources. This integration allows the piece to constantly evolve, reflecting the current environmental conditions with a dynamic display of tranquility or intensity.

BREAKFAST dedicated over four years to bring The Pearl to life, involving innovative conceptualization, design, and the meticulous fabrication of each component. This extended period underscores the artist’s and studio’s commitment to craftsmanship and precise execution.
