Sony has officially introduced the RX1R III, the third-generation model in its critically acclaimed RX1R series. Designed for professional and enthusiast photographers alike, the RX1R III pairs Sony’s imaging expertise with cutting-edge hardware in a premium compact body. The camera features a 61-megapixel 35 mm full-frame Exmor R CMOS sensor, the BIONZ XR image processing engine, and a ZEISS Sonnar T* 35 mm F2 fixed lens.

According to Yang Cheng, Vice President of Imaging Solutions at Sony Electronics, the RX1R III represents the next evolution in Sony’s commitment to high-end compact photography. “This new flagship delivers uncompromising full-frame quality in a form factor built for creators who demand both power and portability,” he said.

Built for Resolution and Range

At the heart of the RX1R III is Sony’s high-resolution 61-megapixel back-illuminated sensor, enhanced by an anti-reflective coating and the removal of the optical low-pass filter. This configuration ensures exceptional clarity, low noise, and a wide dynamic range, making it an ideal tool for demanding photographic work.

The integrated 35 mm F2 lens continues to impress. Sony has optimized the positioning between the lens and sensor at the micron level, delivering sharp, detailed performance in a body small enough to go anywhere.

Smarter Autofocus and AI Tracking

Taking a page from its Alpha series, Sony has equipped the RX1R III with its latest AI processing unit. The technology enables real-time recognition of human bodies, heads, and eyes, and even tracks subjects when their faces are not visible. The autofocus system offers up to 693 phase-detection points, covering roughly 78 percent of the image area for stills.

Even though the RX1R III features a fixed lens, Sony introduces new versatility through its Step Crop Shooting function. This tool allows users to switch between 35 mm, 50 mm, and 70 mm equivalent focal lengths via assigned controls. When shooting in RAW, these focal lengths can also be reselected in post-production. A macro ring provides easy access to close-up shooting, supporting focus distances down to 20 cm.

Creative Controls for Distinctive Styles

The RX1R III includes twelve built-in Creative Looks for photographers and videographers looking to stylize their work in-camera. Each mode can be customized with control over hue, saturation, brightness, contrast, and sharpness. Highlights include FL2 for a filmic, muted aesthetic, and FL3 for vivid, high-impact imagery.

Refined Industrial Design

Constructed from durable magnesium alloy, the RX1R III balances form and function with a minimalist flat-top design. Controls are ergonomically integrated into the body, and the textured grip ensures secure handling. The 2.36 million-dot XGA OLED electronic viewfinder offers sharp visuals with 0.70x magnification.

Powering the camera is Sony’s NP-FW50 battery, rated for up to 300 still images. A USB Type-C port supports USB Power Delivery for fast charging and extended sessions via external power banks.

Sustainability and Accessibility at the Core

The RX1R III is produced under Sony’s ‘Road to Zero’ initiative, which aims for a zero environmental footprint by 2050. The camera is assembled in facilities running on 100 percent renewable energy and is packaged using Sony’s sustainable Original Blended Material made from bamboo, sugarcane fibers, and recycled paper.

Sony has also expanded accessibility features. The RX1R III supports a built-in screen reader and display magnification for users with visual impairments.

Optional Accessories for Enhanced Usability

Several new accessories will be available alongside the RX1R III. The TG-2 thumb grip attaches via the Multi Interface Shoe for improved one-handed operation. The LCS-RXL body case protects the camera while maintaining access to ports and controls. The LHP-1 lens hood, made from lightweight aluminum, safeguards the lens from dirt and impacts.

Pricing and Availability

The Sony RX1R III will be available starting July 2025 for approximately $5,099.99 USD and $6,299.99 CAD. Accessories including the TG-2 ($299.99 USD), LCS-RXL ($249.99 USD), and LHP-1 ($199.99 USD) will follow in August 2025. All products will be offered through Sony and authorized retailers in North America.
