The Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo, inaugurated in 2011, is located at the center of Omotesando, the most beautiful area in Tokyo where many trends and cultural movements spring. Embodying Louis Vuitton’s and Japan’s shared passion for creativity, the Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo is a glass box on the top floor of the Louis Vuitton building designed by Japanese architect Jun Aoki. It is both a visually stimulating architecture and an exhibition place encouraging creation of new contemporary artworks.
Doug Aitken’s body of work ranges from photography, sculpture, and architectural interventions, to films, sound, single and multi-channel video works, and installations. His art, paradoxically abstract, is centred on human figures and landscape, attaining near-physical sensory qualities that exceed the boundaries of simple visual perception. An immersive projection, New Ocean: thaw offers a new look at the poetic vastness of Alaska, nearing the romantic sentiment of the immensity of nature as represented in the 19th-century panoramas, but seen in the current circumstances of climate change, catastrophes and the melting of the glaciers. This spectacular piece, which belongs to the Collection, has been specifically re-designed for Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo by the artist, and is presented within the framework of the “Hors-les-murs” program of the Fondation Louis Vuitton.

Inaugurated in 2014, the Espace Louis Vuitton München contributes to the broader discourse of contemporary art by presenting new positions and curatorial encounters. It encourages the exchange between local and international artistic scenes, art professionals, collectors and the public audience.
In the form of sculptures, videos, engravings, photographs and large scale urban interventions, French artist Cyprien Gaillard’s expanding body of work, which is inspired by architecture and places that reveal the complex histories of the 20th-century utopias, manifests an omnipresent feeling of temporal collision. Bearing witness to the beauty exuding from the apparent violence of his typical visual telescoping, Gaillard’s production exposes both contemporary socio-political realities and the aesthetic appeal born of their brutal clash. Throughout the years, the Collection has brought together a significant number of works by Gaillard, one of the most noteworthy artists of his generation. The Espace Louis Vuitton München is proud to show Real Remnants of Fictive Wars V (2004) and Desniansky Raion (2007) in an exclusive display re-invented by the artist himself for Wolkengarten, prolonging the unveiling of his works from the Collection, which started in Paris in 2015. These works are presented within the framework of the Fondation Louis Vuitton’s ongoing “Hors-les-murs” programme.

Since 2013, the Espace Louis Vuitton Venezia is where contemporary art meets the artistic heritage of La Serenissima. Putting traditional and modern art into context, it offers a means of breaking down barriers, of re-attaching contemporary art to its roots and celebrating the vitality of classical art, with the support Louis Vuitton brings each year to the restauration of famous Venitian art. Alongside, Louis Vuitton invites to an unprecedented film programming in the heart of the legendary Spazio Etoile store in Rome.
As part of the Collateral Events of the 58th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, the Fondation Louis Vuitton has invited French artist Philippe Parreno to create a whole new installation for the Espace. Three interdependent elements (a grand luminous marquee, a mechanical mirrored shutter and a phosphorescent wallpaper patterned with black irises) react thanks to a computer program to the pace of the ongoing development of microorganisms collected during past exhibitions and harvested in a bioreactor specifically developed for the artist by the CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research) and the Physics Department of Ecole Nationale Supérieure (Paris, France). With its disruptive temporality, this exhibition annihilates the familiar markers of perception in favour of a stimulating process of inventing new ways of understanding, defying rational categories and the established order.
Parallel to the exhibition, the Spazio Etoile in Rome shows a unique film programming showcasing all the Fondation Louis Vuitton’s activities since its opening in 2014.

Inaugurated in 2017, the Espace Louis Vuitton Beijing is located in the Central Business District of the Chinese capital. Its 800m² exhibition space is dedicated exclusively to contemporary art exhibitions.
The Espace Louis Vuitton Beijing dedicates its new exhibition to major artist Alberto Giacometti. This show is the sixth presentation within the framework of the Fondation Louis Vuitton’s “Hors-les-murs” programme. Giacometti quickly turned away from the surreal objects that brought him recognition in the 1920s, to focus on the model. As the bodies he sculpted became thinner, and with a sense of lingering failure over his inability to reproduce his models as he perceived them, he achieved extreme simplification of the forms, reducing them to the essential lines of their precarious existence.
This exclusive display gathers eight key masterpieces of Giacometti’s oeuvre, that belong to the Collection: Tête sur tige [Head on a rod] (1947), Trois hommes qui marchent [Three men walking] (1948), Homme qui chavire [Man who capsizes] (1950), Femme de Venise III [Woman of Venice III] (1956), Grande Femme II [Tall Woman II] (1960) and Têtes d’homme [Heads of a man] (Lotar I), (Lotar II) and (Lotar III) (1964-65). These selected works pay tribute to the virtuosity of this iconic Swiss artist.

Inaugurated in 2019, the Espace Louis Vuitton Seoul is nestled on the fourth floor of the Maison Louis Vuitton Seoul, the façade of which was designed by celebrated Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry. A glass structure inspired by the traditional Korean dance Dongnae Hakchum forms the shelter of a contemporary art space, reflecting the sails of the Fondation Louis Vuitton building in Paris.
The Espace Louis Vuitton Seoul presents, for the first time in Korea, the Version IX of Gerhard Richter’s 4900 Colours (2007). Classically trained as a painter, the famous German artist has maintained a lifelong fascination with the power of the image and painting’s relationship with photography. His oeuvre, between figurative and abstract art, varies from photography-based portraits or landscape and still-life paintings, to gestural and monochrome abstractions, and color chart grid paintings where themes of chance, realism and abstraction are prominent. 4900 Colours, which belongs to the Collection, is displayed in Seoul within the framework of the Fondation Louis Vuitton’s Hors-les-murs programme.

The Espace Louis Vuitton Osaka welcomes contemporary art lovers at the fifth floor of the Maison Louis Vuitton Osaka Midosuji. Conceived by Japanese architect Jun Aoki, this emblematic building bears an remarkable façade inspired by a traditional Higaki-Kaisen cargo ship and its billowing sails, drawing on the city’s sea-faring history.
Abstract expressionist painter Joan Mitchell structured her art around her desire to faithfully translate nature counterbalanced by a subjective and violent expressive force. Her chromatic sensuality, supported by the conspicuous structure of her works, refocused her paintings on the landscape in the 1980s, as evidenced by Untitled (1979) and Cypress (1980). On the other hand, Carl Andre’s minimalist oeuvre shows a rigorous execution and an explicit rejection of symbolism. His works, made of fundamental materials equivalent in form and structure, shall have no meaning of their own and bear no trace of his intervention, as seen in Draco (1979-2008) and its typical relationship to the space.
Espace Louis Vuitton Osaka’s inaugural show, Fragments of a landscape, reveals the richness of these major artists’ seemingly conflicting views, between violently colored expressive freedom and unvarnished geometric rigor. The works, which belong to the Collection, are presented within the framework of the “Hors-les-murs” programme of the Fondation Louis Vuitton.
