In Japan, the summer tradition “Sagaribana” can only be seen in parts of the Nansei Islands. Also known as an “overnight flower,” it blooms at night and scatters at dawn … it’s a phantom flower!

Hoshino Resorts Iriomote Hotel will host a special breakfast experience from July 5th to 15th, 2022. That is the time the flowers will bloom overnight.

In the early morning, you can enjoy a view of the entire river filled with flowers. A special seat will be set up at that location, and you can enjoy a colorful breakfast that expresses the scenery while watching the ephemeral flowers floating on the surface of the river nearby.

What is the flower “Sagaribana” that can only be seen during this period?

It is a plant that can be seen in the tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia and inhabits only the Nansei Islands in Japan. It begins to bloom at night, blooms in the middle of the night, and drops flowers early in the morning. It is also called a phantom flower or one night flower because it blooms and scatters without people noticing it. The sweet scent like vanilla is also characteristic, and the whole area is wrapped in a sweet scent.  Since Iriomote Island has about 90% of the mangrove forests in Japan, it has the largest native environment of Sagaribana in any region.  Since it grows naturally along the river, you can enjoy the fallen flowers floating on the surface of the river on Iriomote Island.
