Located in the uplands of Bali, an intimate resort with a strong artistic heritage has become renowned not only for its impressive collection of sculptures, statues, and paintings amassed over the founder’s lifetime but also for its significant contributions to the local art scene, particularly in the realm of performing arts. At this unique establishment, Tanah Gajah, a Resort by Hadiprana, a recent announcement has stirred excitement among visitors. They have expanded their performance schedule to include a third night, now offering their mesmerizing Kecak extravaganza, a traditional and captivating Balinese dance and drama, on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. This spectacular presentation of the Ramayana narrative, performed by a troupe of 60-70 bare-chested men, promises an unforgettable experience that is on the bucket list of many who venture to this beautiful island.

The performance itself encompasses a rich tapestry of love and war, struggle and triumph, the eternal battle between good and evil, featuring human royalty and a charismatic monkey king. As the performers chant and dance in a trance-like state, forming concentric rings around an open flame beneath the starry night sky, the hypnotic rhythm emanates from the chorus of monkeys and their entrancing chants. Kecak, which originated in Bali almost a century ago in the 1930s, can trace its roots back to Sanghyang, an ancient trance-like dance that also evolved on this enchanting island.

The enchanting evening begins promptly at 7 pm as guests are warmly greeted with chilled lemongrass drinks and adorned with frangipani flowers by Balinese women elegantly attired in traditional Kebaya attire. They are then ushered to their seats, positioned in front of one of the resort’s most magnificent structures, the Candi Bentar, a Balinese-style split gateway adorned with intricately carved elephants. Thanks to the thoughtful design of the resort’s amphitheater, the audience enjoys spacious surroundings while still savoring the intimate atmosphere.

Under the enchanting glow of torchlight, guests are treated to a captivating 30-minute Balinese Kecak and fire dance performance. Following the show, there’s an opportunity for guests to capture cherished moments with the talented performers before indulging in a sumptuous Royal Rijsttafel dinner experience. This family-style three-course menu is served at The Tempayan restaurant. For those seeking a more private encounter with this mesmerizing art form, private performances can be arranged upon request.

The Kecak performances will continue three times a week until December 31st, 2023, after which they will return to Tuesday and Friday performances exclusively in 2024. Rates for this unforgettable experience start at IDR 785,000++ per person, inclusive of dinner, with a special discount for children aged 6-11 years old, and complimentary admission for children under 6. Reservations are strongly encouraged and should be made in advance to secure a place at this enchanting event.
