In a groundbreaking development, Sony unveiled the highly-anticipated Alpha 9 III (α9 III) camera, boasting a cutting-edge full-frame global shutter image sensor—an unprecedented technological feat that promises to redefine the landscape of professional photography.
The Alpha 9 III’s revolutionary global shutter full-frame image sensor, equipped with approximately 24.6 effective megapixels and blackout-free continuous shooting capabilities of up to 120 frames per second, is poised to set new standards in speed and precision. This breakthrough technology allows photographers to capture rapid-fire sequences without distortion or camera blackout, providing an unparalleled tool for capturing fleeting moments with astonishing clarity.
The sensor’s capabilities are complemented by Sony’s most advanced autofocus system to date, featuring AI autofocus with an astounding speed of up to 120 times AF/AE focus calculations per second. The camera introduces a high-density focal plane phase detection AF, coupled with Real-time Recognition AF, enabling precise subject recognition and tracking across a diverse range of scenarios.
Yann Salmon Legagneur, Head of IP&S Marketing, Sony Europe, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The new Alpha 9 III is a landmark achievement for Sony’s imaging business.” He emphasized that every aspect of the camera, from the sensor to button layouts, has been meticulously crafted based on feedback and requests from the professional imaging community.
Key features of the α9 III include 8.0 stops of optical 5-axis in-body image stabilization, facilitating high-quality image rendering even in challenging shooting conditions. The camera achieves a maximum shutter speed of 1/80000 second, liberating it from conventional mechanical shutter limitations and enabling distortion-free, high-speed photography.
Beyond its prowess in still photography, the global shutter image sensor proves invaluable for videographers. The α9 III can record 4K 120p high-frame-rate video without cropping, allowing users to capture cinematic moments with precision. The camera is equipped with S-Cinetone™, a feature derived from the VENICE digital cinema camera, enhancing video production with natural skin tones and striking highlights.
The α9 III’s design reflects a commitment to meeting the needs of professional photographers. The grip has been redesigned for improved ergonomics, ensuring comfortable handling during extended use or when working with telephoto lenses.
