The Ferrari KC23 emerged as one of the latest additions to its One-Off series this year. It became the newest creation in the marque’s Special Projects program, commissioned by one of the leading collectors within the Prancing Horse community. The KC23 one-off stood out as a bold and extreme vision of the potential future of closed-wheel racing. Representing a superlative reinterpretation of Maranello’s most successful track car, the 488 GT3 in its ‘Evo 2020’ version, the KC23 showcased an incredible ability to exude elegance at a standstill and captivate viewers in motion. This effect was achieved through groundbreaking aerodynamic solutions, including motorized air intake vents and an imposing rear wing.

Designed under the guidance of Flavio Manzoni at the Ferrari Styling Centre, the KC23 was based on the 488 GT3 Evo 2020 platform, inheriting its layout, chassis, and engine. The foundation for the project was the highly distinguished 488 GT3, a racing powerhouse since 2016 with a track record of over 530 victories and more than 119 championships, solidifying its status as the most successful racing Ferrari in history.

Due to its extreme engine, chassis, and suspension setup, the KC23 was exclusively designed for non-competitive track use. Its most distinctive feature was its dual configuration, revealing clean, sleek forms at rest and transforming on the track to showcase impressive air intakes and a commanding rear wing.

From the project’s inception, in collaboration with the client, the Ferrari Styling Centre focused on creating a radical one-off car free from homologation constraints. The goal was to craft a vehicle with timeless lines, an instant classic, while also providing a tantalizing glimpse into the future of supercars. Achieving this demanded a comprehensive redesign of every line of the 488 GT3 Evo 2020, including glass surfaces and light clusters.

The result was a car with monolithic beauty, as if sculpted from a single block of metal. The design also concealed several technical functions, such as side air intakes that opened automatically with the activation of the mid-rear V8 twin-turbo engine, giving the KC23 a lifelike appearance. The rear wing was removable, emphasizing clean, formal lines when the car was not on the track.

The KC23’s surface treatment featured a smooth and seamless design, with sharp angles reduced to a minimum to underscore its spare, sinuous purity. When the engine was activated, the car underwent a radical transformation, revealing its racing stance and aggression, highlighted by the imposing rear wing designed to cut through corners and unleash the V8’s horsepower.

To maintain the performance of the donor car, despite the KC23’s different silhouette, designers worked on downforce and cooling, incorporating custom kinematics in panels that activated automatically when the engine was turned on. The butterfly doors, opening vertically on single front hinges, mirrored another iconic supercar, the LaFerrari.

The cabin, kept as pared-back as possible, resembled the 488 GT3 Evo 2020, with specific seats trimmed in Alcantara® featuring an electro-welded logo. Rearward visibility was ensured by a video camera system that also contributed to improved aerodynamics by allowing the removal of traditional wing mirrors.
