Halloween is right around the corner and there are plenty of ways to get into the spooky spirit in Britain! Check out our recommendations below to have a scary good time in Britain this fall.

Britain’s Most Haunted Castles: Britain is home to thousands of castles, each with its own stories to tell – and perhaps a few lingering spirits. If you’re looking for a fright this Halloween, check out Chillingham Castle, Britain’s most haunted castle. Brave visitors can join an evening ghost tour of this imposing 13th century fortress, and even book a room for an overnight stay. Ghost hunters can also head to Bamburgh Castle to meet the Pink Lady and fellow spirit-in-residence Green Jane, hear the tale of the Vampire of Alnwick Castle or even meet some royal ghosts at Hampton Court Palace or the Tower of London.

Follow in Dracula’s Footsteps: The picturesque seaside village of Whitby has a dark side! Bram Stoker drew inspiration from the mystical ruins of Whitby Abbey and set the town as pivotal location in his infamous novel Dracula. In 2022 we celebrate the 125th anniversary of Stoker’s story, and to this day the town of Whitby embraces its heritage as the (temporary) home of Count Dracula. Follow in Stoker’s footsteps on a Whitby Ghost & Dracula Walk, and plan to visit for one of the town’s twice-annual Goth Weekends.

Meet Frankenstein’s Monster: Head to Bath to visit Mary Shelley’s House of Frankenstein, an entertaining and immersive museum commemorating the tragic life of Mary Shelley and the legacy of her groundbreaking novel. The exhibition includes an animated construction of Frankenstein’s creature as depicted in the book, pale and looming over 9 feet tall – a monstrous encounter you won’t soon forget! The museum also features fun experiences like a grisly escape room and the “Body in a Suitcase” puzzle game and they go all-out for Halloween, transforming the museum after dark into an intense multi-sensory horror event (Oct 21-31).

Discover the Dark Side of Britain’s Cities: Experience another side of Britain’s history on a ghost tour. In London, learn the real history of Jack the Ripper or take a Ghost Tour of Greenwich to hear the spookier side of Britain’s royal maritime history. Head underground in Edinburgh for a theatrical tour of the city’s hidden alleys and courtyards, or take a ghost tour of Cardiff Castle to explore the fortress and see who might be roaming the Welsh capital after dark.
