After an eight-year hiatus from the silver screen, master storyteller Lee Chang-dong is stepping back into the director’s chair with Possible Love (working title), now in production for Netflix. The film promises to weave a deeply layered portrait of two married couples whose lives could not be more different — until fate draws them into each other’s orbit, and the cracks beneath their seemingly ordinary routines begin to show.

The casting reads like a dream for K-drama and Korean cinema fans alike. Jeon Do-yeon, fresh from Kill Boksoon and Revolver, takes on the role of Mi-ok, opposite her long-time co-star Sul Kyung-gu (A Normal Family, Idol, The Merciless). The second couple pairs Zo In-sung (Moving, Escape from Mogadishu) as Sang-woo with Cho Yeo-jeong, the Parasite star whose ensemble swept the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The project is a reunion of cinematic heavyweights. Jeon Do-yeon previously worked with Lee on Secret Sunshine, a performance that earned her Best Actress at Cannes. She and Sul Kyung-gu bring a proven on-screen chemistry, with Possible Love marking their fourth collaboration after I Wish I Had a Wife, Birthday, and Kill Boksoon. Lee also reconnects with Sul after Peppermint Candy and Oasis. The screenplay is co-written by Oh Jung-mi, Lee’s collaborator on Burning, and produced by Pinehouse Film, the same company behind Burning.

Lee Chang-dong’s filmography is a masterclass in emotionally charged, socially resonant storytelling. From the raw grit of Green Fish to the haunting lyricism of Poetry, his works have earned accolades at Cannes, Venice, and beyond. Oasis claimed the Silver Lion for Best Direction in Venice. Secret Sunshine and Poetry took top honors at Cannes, while Burning secured the International Critics’ Prize and global acclaim.

With Possible Love, Lee appears poised to deliver another poignant exploration of human connection, frailty, and resilience. For fans of complex storytelling and powerhouse performances, this is one to watch closely when it lands on Netflix.
