Ensign Abbigail Sharma hailed from Fullerton, California, and was currently stationed on the USS Winston S. Churchill, a formidable U.S. Navy warship based in Mayport, Florida. Having graduated from Troy High School in 2017, Sharma had enlisted in the Navy exactly one year ago. Furthermore, in 2021, Sharma had completed a bachelor’s degree from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.

In discussing the decision to join the Navy, Sharma shared, “The motivation behind my enlistment was to continue the honorable family tradition of serving our nation and to give back to the country that has blessed me beyond measure. My father, Ravi Sharma, had previously served as a lieutenant in the Explosive Ordnance Disposal, and next year, my sister, Anjali, is set to commission as a Marine Corps officer.”

As part of her Navy journey, Sharma had learned to draw from the values instilled in her during her time in Fullerton. Reflecting on this, she stated, “My hometown taught me a crucial lesson about treating everyone with dignity and understanding that we all come from diverse backgrounds. By coming together, we can achieve remarkable feats.”

Assigned to the USS Winston S. Churchill, a versatile guided-missile destroyer, Sharma and over 300 other sailors worked in specialized roles, contributing to the ship’s operational readiness and prowess. The destroyer possessed an array of warfighting capabilities, equipped with tomahawk missiles, torpedoes, guns, and a phalanx close-in weapons system.

Emphasizing the significance of a robust Navy, Admiral Mike Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations, stated, “Our mission remains timeless – to provide our fellow citizens with nothing less than the very best Navy: fully combat ready at all times, focused on warfighting excellence, and committed to superior leadership at every single level. This is our calling. And I cannot imagine a calling more worthy.”

As a Navy servicemember, Sharma played a crucial role in the nation’s efforts to strengthen alliances, modernize capabilities, and maintain military readiness in line with the National Defense Strategy. For Sharma, being part of the Navy meant upholding the ideals of freedom and democracy while protecting the nation’s seas and coasts.

Reveling in her achievements during military service, Sharma expressed, “I take great pride in being commissioned as an officer and being entrusted with leadership responsibilities.”

Throughout her journey, Sharma remained grateful to her father, who had been a constant source of inspiration and encouragement. She acknowledged, “I owe my deepest gratitude to my dad for always believing in me and being my greatest motivation to join the Navy. He taught me that hard work and resilience can pave the way for accomplishing anything I set my mind to.”

As Sharma and her fellow sailors continued to train and execute missions, their dedication and service contributed to the safeguarding of their country and the prosperity of the United States.
