Today, the groundbreaking for the Jeffrey Open Space Trail (JOST) Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge Project was hosted by City of Irvine officials alongside Senator Dave Min.  The JOST currently spans 3.5 miles across Irvine, and with $14.5 million in funding secured, attention is now focused on completing a crucial portion: a 1.5-mile extension from Barranca to Interstate 5.

Seen as a cornerstone of the region’s open space strategy, the JOST will traverse Senate District 37, connecting existing bike and pedestrian pathways. The upcoming JOST bridge is slated to be positioned south of Jeffrey Road. The JOST Extension (Barranca to Walnut) Project is poised to finalize a significant Class I bicycle and pedestrian route within Irvine’s broader trail and open space network. These combined efforts aim to bridge divides and create a vital link between trails stretching from the Pacific Ocean to the Santa Ana Mountains and Cleveland National Forest.

Mayor Farrah N. Khan expressed her satisfaction, stating, “Breaking ground on the JOST bridge, soon to be Irvine’s longest, marks a pivotal moment in completing the trail and improving accessibility for Irvine residents and beyond. Witnessing many of these projects nearing completion fills me with immense pride, ensuring a sustainable future for the City.”

The proposed bridge, spanning nearly 1,200 feet in length and 15 feet in width, will cross Interstate 5, the Caltrans Park & Ride lot, and Walnut Avenue. Drawing inspiration from the existing JOST and elements of the Jeffrey Open Space Spine Community Consensus Plan, architectural features will complement the surrounding landscape. Furthermore, the inclusion of lighting elements will ensure the bridge remains functional and visually appealing day and night.

Construction of the facility is estimated to take approximately two years, with the bridge anticipated to be open for public use by early 2026.

Senator Dave Min expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “Linking the Jeffrey Open Space Trail from the mountains to the coastline will further solidify Orange County as a premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Securing a $14.5 million investment in the State Budget in my first year in the State Senate to kickstart construction on the final segment of this vision was a significant achievement. With today’s groundbreaking on the project, we move one step closer to realizing the connection between JOST and the coastal trail network, Santa Ana Mountains, and Cleveland National Forest.”
