Muzeo Museum and Cultural Center has announced the opening of the exhibition titled “Rooted: Asserting Space in Contemporary Art” on June 17, 2023, in the Main Gallery. This exhibition, curated by art historian Carol Henke and art collector Dee Kerrison, showcases a selection of contemporary art by artists living and working in southern California. The purpose of Rooted is to explore the presence of people of color in contemporary culture through various artistic mediums, while addressing issues of visibility, sovereignty, and the connection to specific times and places. The featured artists include Abel Alejandre, Jackie Amézquita, April Bey, Veronica Fernandez, Daniel Tyree Gaitor-Lomack, Daniela García-Hamilton, Greg Ito, Martine Syms, Devon Tsuno, and Diane Williams.

Simultaneously, on June 17th, Muzeo will also open “Colors Tell a Story: The Art of Irfan Murtaza” in the upper Carnegie Building galleries. In this exhibition, Murtaza presents a collection of paintings that reflect architecture and sculpture, exploring themes from ancient, modern, and sublime art from South and Western Asia as well as North America.

Additionally, the lower Carnegie Building galleries will host the 2023 MAKKERS@MUZEO artist in residence program featuring tattoo and watercolor artist Show Pigeon (Evie Yapelli). Show Pigeon will spend her residency at Muzeo creating a series of ink and watercolor paintings that celebrate southern California through the revival of vintage ephemera. Visitors are invited to watch Show Pigeon work and even try their hand at some of her watercolor techniques on Sundays and Wednesdays from June 21st to July 19th, between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

In the Carnegie Building lower galleries, the Muzeo Museum and Cultural Center presents its inaugural Artist’s Business Blueprint Emerging Artists Showcase. This exhibition showcases a remarkable lineup of up-and-coming artists who are expected to make significant contributions to the art world in the future, each demonstrating their unique vision and style. The showcase represents the culmination of the Artist Business Blueprint Workshop, a series of entrepreneurial classes specifically designed to provide emerging artists with financial literacy and business strategies.

On June 17th, visitors have the opportunity to view all the exhibitions and programs for free from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. During this time, attendees can enjoy light refreshments and music while mingling with some of the artists, curators, and collaborators who played vital roles in bringing these exhibitions to life. Tickets for the reception can be reserved in advance at https://muzeo.ticketing.veevartapp.com/tickets/view/list/summer-exhibitions-reception.

The exhibitions “Rooted: Asserting Space in Contemporary Art” and “Colors Tell a Story: The Art of Irfan Murtaza” will be running from June 18 to September 3, 2023. The onsite MAKERS@MUZEO artist residency featuring Show Pigeon will take place at Muzeo on Sundays and Wednesdays, specifically from June 21st to July 19th, between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

Furthermore, the Artist Business Blueprint Showcase will be on display from June 18 to June 25, 2023. To gain access to all the galleries, visitors are required to purchase admission tickets, which cover entry to all exhibits. The Muzeo galleries are open from Wednesday to Sunday, operating hours being 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Tickets can be obtained either at the Muzeo ticket counter or online through muzeo.org.

The Muzeo Museum and Cultural Center is conveniently located at 241 S. Anaheim Blvd. in Anaheim, California. Visitors can find parking facilities throughout the downtown area.
