Onimusha: Way of the Sword Preview: Release Date, Demo, and Series Roots

Capcom has officially brought back one of its most iconic franchises with the release of Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Arriving on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, the game marks the first mainline entry in the long-dormant action series in over two decades. The franchise previously lay quiet after 2006’s Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, save for a few remasters and spin-offs.

The History of Onimusha

The series originally debuted in 2001 on the PlayStation 2 with Onimusha: Warlords. Conceived as a samurai themed offshoot of Resident Evil set in feudal Japan, the original game combined fixed camera perspectives, pre-rendered backgrounds, and light puzzle solving with fast-paced sword combat. Players took on the role of warriors granted powers by the supernatural Oni to battle demonic monsters known as the Genma.

The franchise grew into one of Capcom’s flagship properties during the early 2000s. It became known for blending real historical figures and settings with dark fantasy, as well as utilizing likenesses of famous actors for its protagonists. The series also introduced the Issen mechanic, a precise counter-attack system that became a core signature of its gameplay. Subsequent entries, including Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny, Onimusha 3: Demon Siege, and Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, gradually shifted away from survival horror toward pure, high-octane action. Across its lifespan, the franchise has surpassed 9.1 million units sold globally.

Way of the Sword Gameplay and Setting

Onimusha: Way of the Sword moves the timeline to an early Edo-era Kyoto corrupted by malevolent clouds of Malice. Players control legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, whose character model and likeness are inspired by late cinema icon Toshiro Mifune.

Built on Capcom’s RE Engine, the new entry modernizes the franchise’s formula. It ditches fixed camera angles in favor of a third-person action perspective, focusing on deliberate blade encounters. Mechanics center around timed blocks, parries, deflection, and the signature soul-absorbing Oni Gauntlet. The game features encounters against major historical rivals such as Sasaki Ganryu, while tasking players with clearing hordes of Genma across a dark fantasy recreation of Kyoto.

Try Before You Buy: The Playable Demo

Ahead of the game’s official launch on September 25, 2026, Capcom released a standalone playable teaser titled Onimusha: Way of the Sword DEMO. The demo offers an early look at the game’s updated mechanics, granting access to a portion of the main story centered around the corrupted Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto.

Players downloading the sampler can get hands-on experience with the revised swordplay, practice timed parries and counter-attacks, and take on a multi-stage boss encounter against Sasaki Ganryu. The demo is currently available as a free download across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. As an added incentive, gamers who finish the demo and keep their save file intact will unlock an exclusive equipment piece, the Lovable Charm: Kubi Akari, which grants a passive soul-absorption boost when transferred to the full game.
