Over the years, some of the original structures have remained, adding to the rustic feel of the canyon. However, due to age and wear and tear, the City of Irvine has decided to rehabilitate the site to keep it safe and functional for future generations to enjoy.

The Bommer Canyon Community Park Rehabilitation Project began in 2020 with the clearing of older structures to make way for new ones that will match the park’s original ranch style but with improvements to the park’s accessibility, including new restrooms and more pathways. The construction is expected to be complete by mid-2023, and reservations are currently unavailable.

The community feedback received by the City’s public outreach efforts in 2018 was incorporated into the rehabilitation design for the Cattle Camp area. This ensures that the new structures will cater to the needs of the community while preserving the historical significance of the site. The site is an important preservation area for many local plants and wildlife, including several endangered species, and the project aims to maintain the ecological balance while providing a safe and accessible venue for events.

Bommer Canyon Community Park is located at 11 Bommer Canyon Road, in the heart of the City’s open space preservation area. It’s a 15-acre community park that contains land that once served as a rest area for ranch hands known as the former Cattle Camp. Today, it’s one of Irvine’s most popular rental facilities, offering a unique rustic setting for special events. The site consists of a “Chuck Wagon” food service building, Drink Pavilion, trailer for staff offices, storage units, stage area, picnic tables, fire ring, barbeque spit, and play/activity area.

The full 4.8 mile hike showcases natural beauty, has lots of wildlife spotting opportunities, an interesting history, and sweeping vistas as you approach the highest point in the San Joaquin Hills. But if you’re looking for something easy, the 2-mile option is a great flat hike that’s perfect for families.
