On Friday, June 16, 2023, “Bunkamura Le Cinema” will relocate from its current location in Tokyo’s Shibuya district to the site of “Shibuya TOEI.” The complex cultural facility, which opened in September 1989 as Japan’s first large-scale facility of its kind, has been showcasing various cultural arts such as music, dance, theater, art, and movies. As a new movie theater called “Bunkamura le cinema Shibuya Miyashita,” will continue screening activities.

The new movie theater will kick off its opening with a full-fledged retrospective screening of actress Maggie Chan’s works, known for her roles in films such as Wong Kar-wai’s “The Year of the Flower.” Additionally, in July and August, the theater will screen “Great Freedom,” a movie based on a true story that depicts a man’s fight for the “freedom to love” in post-World War II Germany, where homosexuality was prohibited. Three new films will also be shown: “Saint-Omer: A Defendant,” a shocking court drama, and “Returning to Seoul,” which portrays the life of a woman searching for her roots in a foreign land, set in the city of Seoul.
