Italdesign EVX Puts VW’s MEB Platform Under the Spotlight

Italdesign is taking a bold look at the future of compact electric mobility with the EVX, a 2+2 coupé concept built around Volkswagen Group’s MEB+ Front Drive architecture. Developed as an internal research exercise, EVX explores alternative design volumes and proportions compared to other Volkswagen models. Instead of a physical prototype, Italdesign will unveil the study as a holographic visualization on September 10 at the Volkswagen Group stand (Hall B1, Stand E10) during the IAA Summit in Munich.

The project, commissioned by Volkswagen Platform Business, goes beyond a mere styling study. EVX investigates the balance and overall proportions achievable on the MEB platform, demonstrating how the updated MEB+ package can stretch to meet a new Electric Urban Car Family’s needs. Measuring 4.23 meters long, 1.82 meters wide and 1.49 meters high, with a 2.6 meter wheelbase, the three-door coupé underscores how flexible this EV architecture can be.

Italdesign designed EVX to appeal to automakers both inside and outside the Volkswagen Group. While not intended for production, the concept includes a full preliminary feasibility study, ensuring that its daring proportions remain rooted in real-world engineering. That focus on practical design reflects Italdesign’s long-standing philosophy: marrying visionary aesthetics with achievable solutions.

Strategically, EVX doubles as a showcase for Italdesign’s advanced digital modeling skills. The company’s CAS (Computer Aided Styling) team translated a purely conceptual vision into refined 3D forms under tight timelines, highlighting its ability to turn early-stage ideas into precise, production-ready data.

By bridging Volkswagen’s own innovation goals with the needs of external OEMs, Italdesign demonstrates its dual role as both an in-house design and engineering powerhouse and an independent partner. The EVX concept makes the case that the MEB platform’s flexibility—and Italdesign’s agile, holistic approach—can help shape a wide range of future electric vehicles.
