General Motors Co. made an announcement today regarding its collaboration with Tesla. It was revealed that they would be incorporating the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector design into their electric vehicles (EVs) starting in 2025.

As part of this partnership, GM EV drivers would gain access to over 12,000 Tesla Superchargers located throughout North America, with plans for further expansion. This collaboration aimed to support GM’s ongoing efforts to enhance charging infrastructure, with a focus on increasing accessibility at homes, workplaces, and public spaces. This initiative built upon GM’s existing Ultium Charge 360 program and mobile apps, which already offered over 134,000 chargers for GM EV drivers.

Mary Barra, the Chair and CEO of GM, expressed their vision of a future dominated by electric vehicles, where millions of high-quality EVs would be produced across various categories and price points. She emphasized the importance of creating an ecosystem that would facilitate widespread EV adoption. Barra regarded this collaboration as a crucial component of their strategy, representing a significant milestone in expanding fast charger access for their customers. She believed that not only would it streamline the transition to electric vehicles, but it could also drive the industry towards a unified charging standard across North America.

According to the agreement, GM EV drivers would gain access to the Tesla Supercharger Network starting in 2024, initially requiring the use of an adapter. However, by 2025, GM’s upcoming EV models would be equipped with a NACS inlet, enabling direct access to Tesla Superchargers without the need for an adapter. GM also had plans to develop adapters for NACS-enabled vehicle owners, allowing them to charge their vehicles at CCS-capable fast charge stations in the future.

GM additionally planned to integrate the Tesla Supercharger Network into their vehicle and mobile apps. This integration would facilitate a seamless charging experience for GM EV drivers, enabling them to easily locate, pay for, and initiate charging at available Tesla Superchargers. It would supplement the growing Ultium Charge 360 Network of charging stations and other charging stations made available by GM through existing partnerships with other charging networks.
