Art Basel has opened its first fair in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia, marking a pivotal expansion of the renowned platform with the launch of Art Basel Qatar in Doha. Set across Msheireb Downtown Doha, the inaugural edition unfolds through February 7 and signals a recalibration of how an international art fair can engage with place, pace, and artistic context.
Rather than relying on the familiar grid of booths, Art Basel Qatar adopts a format centered on solo artist presentations. Eighty seven international exhibitors present the work of eighty four artists, more than half of whom are from the MENASA region. Spread across M7 and the Doha Design District, the fair encourages sustained encounters with individual practices, favoring depth and focus over accumulation.

The edition is shaped by the theme Becoming, a framework that reflects both personal and collective transformation. Under the artistic leadership of Vincenzo de Bellis and Wael Shawky, the fair positions itself as a living structure designed to evolve in dialogue with its surroundings. The result is a slower rhythm and an atmosphere that invites reflection, conversation, and return visits.
On the eve of the VIP preview, the fair extended into the city with a large scale public commission by Jenny Holzer at the Museum of Islamic Art. Titled SONG, the work activated the museum through projections across its main facade and inner courtyard, accompanied by a choreographed performance of more than seven hundred drones in the night sky. Drawing on poetry by Mahmoud Darwish and Nujoom Alghanem, Holzer brought Arabic and English text into public space as light, movement, and interruption. Following its debut, the projections continue nightly throughout the fair.
Art Basel Qatar represents a significant moment in the fair’s fifty five year history. Developed in partnership with Qatar Sports Investments and QC+, and supported by Visit Qatar as lead partner, the fair responds to Qatar’s long standing investment in culture while connecting regional artistic production to Art Basel’s global network. The ambition extends beyond a single week, aiming instead to establish a platform for long term exchange between artists, galleries, and audiences.

By embedding itself within Doha’s cultural landscape and rethinking the structure of the art fair itself, Art Basel Qatar positions the city as a site of encounter rather than spectacle. It is an opening statement that suggests how global art events might evolve when they are conceived not as imports, but as conversations rooted in place.
