The LEGO Group is expanding what physical play can do without changing what makes LEGO feel like LEGO. At CES 2026, the company introduced LEGO SMART Play, a new interactive platform that allows LEGO creations to respond dynamically to how they are played with, bringing sound, behavior, and feedback directly into brick built worlds without relying on screens.
LEGO SMART Play launches globally on March 1, 2026, with preorders opening January 9, and is designed to grow over time through new sets, updates, and platform technologies. The system is fully compatible with the existing LEGO System in Play, ensuring that traditional building remains at the center of the experience.
The announcement was made during a CES presentation led by Julia Goldin, Chief Product and Marketing Officer of the LEGO Group, and Tom Donaldson, Senior Vice President and Head of the Creative Play Lab. The reveal was joined by Asad Ayaz, Chief Brand Officer of The Walt Disney Company and President of Disney Entertainment Marketing, and Dave Filoni, Chief Creative Officer of Lucasfilm, who confirmed that LEGO Star Wars would be the first theme to launch with LEGO SMART Play enabled sets.
LEGO described LEGO SMART Play as one of the most significant evolutions of the LEGO System in Play since the introduction of the LEGO Minifigure in 1978.
What LEGO SMART Play is and how it works
At the center of LEGO SMART Play is the LEGO SMART Brick, a newly developed component that enables responsive physical play. The SMART Brick contains more than 20 patented, world first technologies and is powered by a custom made chip smaller than a standard LEGO stud.
Developed by the LEGO Group’s Creative Play Lab, the SMART Brick is designed to disappear into play while enabling real time interaction. Inside the brick are sensors, accelerometers, light sensing, and sound detection, along with a miniature speaker driven by an onboard synthesizer. The system supports easy wireless charging and is engineered to be durable for everyday play.
LEGO SMART Tags and LEGO SMART Minifigures work alongside the SMART Brick to complete the platform. These elements allow LEGO builds to respond contextually with appropriate sounds, behaviors, and feedback based on how they are moved, handled, or combined. All SMART Play elements are fully compatible with existing LEGO bricks, allowing builders to integrate interactive play into traditional builds rather than replacing them.
According to the LEGO Group, the intent is to turn children’s imaginative ideas into moments of surprise and discovery, where stories unfold through hands on interaction rather than screens or apps.

LEGO Star Wars becomes the first SMART Play universe
The first LEGO SMART Play enabled sets will debut within the LEGO Star Wars portfolio, chosen for its iconic characters, recognizable vehicles, and storytelling potential. LEGO described the theme as the ideal foundation for a system that reacts to play in real time.
All three initial LEGO Star Wars SMART Play sets are All In One packages that include a LEGO SMART Brick, SMART Minifigures, SMART Tags, and traditional LEGO elements.

A platform designed to grow
The LEGO Group emphasized that LEGO SMART Play is not a one off product line, but a platform that will continue to evolve. Future updates, new technologies, and additional themes are planned, with more announcements expected after launch.
For LEGO fans, LEGO SMART Play represents a carefully balanced shift. The bricks remain physical, creativity remains open ended, and screens remain out of the equation. What changes is that LEGO builds can now listen, react, and respond, turning classic play patterns into interactive storytelling moments that quite literally play back.
