At CES 2026, the new BMW iX3 steps into the spotlight as more than just another electric SUV debut. It arrives as the first production model of BMW’s Neue Klasse and, more importantly, as a clear signal of where the brand’s technology, software strategy, and electric mobility ambitions are headed. This is the first public appearance of BMW’s next generation AI powered Intelligent Personal Assistant, now expanded with Amazon Alexa Plus, and it sets the tone for a wave of innovation that will roll out across roughly 40 new and updated BMW models by 2027.

The BMW iX3 matters because it brings several long term ideas into everyday reality. It is the first vehicle to fully express BMW’s Neue Klasse philosophy, combining a software defined vehicle architecture, a new digital user experience, and sixth generation electric drive technology into a single, production ready package. Rather than presenting technology as a future promise, BMW uses the iX3 to show how these systems work together in real driving, charging, and daily use.

A year after BMW introduced the Panoramic iDrive and BMW Operating System X at CES 2025, the iX3 becomes the first vehicle where visitors can experience this interface as it was intended to be used. The system blends expansive digital displays with carefully chosen physical controls, staying true to BMW’s long held principle of keeping the driver focused on the road. The result is an interface that feels modern without being overwhelming, and advanced without demanding constant attention.

At the center of this experience is the next generation BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. For the first time, BMW has integrated Amazon Alexa Plus directly into its own voice assistant, making BMW the first automaker to take this step. The practical benefit is immediately clear. Drivers and passengers can speak naturally to the car, ask more than one question at a time, and mix requests about vehicle functions with general knowledge questions in a single sentence. Under the hood, the system is powered by a large language model, a form of generative AI that understands context and responds conversationally rather than relying on rigid command structures. Starting in the second half of 2026, this assistant will be rolled out in Germany and the United States across BMW models equipped with Operating System 9 and X.

Entertainment is another area where BMW Operating System X shows its strengths. The iX3 turns downtime into usable time, especially while charging or waiting. Alongside familiar services such as Disney Plus, BMW introduces the Video App powered by TiVo, which enables video streaming on the central display when the vehicle is stationary. The content offering includes news, live programming, and on demand streaming, with the catalog designed to grow continuously.

The BMW ConnectedDrive Store expands the ecosystem further. YouTube Music joins a global lineup of more than 85 apps across music, entertainment, gaming, news, and travel. With access to over 300 million tracks, YouTube Music brings a familiar and comprehensive audio experience into the car. Zoom is also available for the first time on the iX3’s central display, allowing video calls while the vehicle is stationary. Once the car starts moving, video automatically switches off and the call continues in audio, keeping safety front and center.

Gaming continues to evolve inside the vehicle as well. AirConsole, first introduced with BMW Operating System 8.5, returns in the iX3 with popular titles such as UNO Car Party. A notable addition is Hot Wheels Xtreme Overdrive from Mattel, available exclusively to BMW customers. Passengers can use their smartphones as controllers, making shared gaming easy, while selected titles also support Bluetooth controllers from traditional gaming consoles.

Beyond the digital experience, the BMW iX3 introduces sixth generation BMW eDrive technology, developed specifically for the Neue Klasse. This includes new electric motors, a completely redesigned high voltage battery with cylindrical cells, and an 800 volt electrical architecture. In the BMW iX3 50 xDrive, two electric motors produce a combined 345 kilowatts, or 469 horsepower, with 645 newton meters of torque. Acceleration from zero to 100 kilometers per hour takes 4.9 seconds, with a top speed of 210 kilometers per hour.

The all wheel drive system combines an electrically excited synchronous motor at the rear with a new asynchronous motor at the front. This pairing balances efficiency, performance, and cost, reflecting BMW’s pragmatic approach to electric mobility. Compared with the previous generation, the new drive system reduces energy losses by 40 percent, cuts weight by 10 percent, and lowers manufacturing costs by 20 percent.

The battery architecture represents an equally important step forward. Energy density at the cell level increases by 20 percent, while charging speeds improve by up to 30 percent. BMW integrates the cylindrical cells directly into the battery pack and uses the battery as a structural element of the vehicle body, reducing weight and improving efficiency. With 108.7 kilowatt hours of usable energy, the BMW iX3 50 xDrive achieves a range of up to 805 kilometers in the WLTP cycle.

Charging performance reflects the same focus on everyday usability. At an 800 volt DC fast charging station, the iX3 can add up to 372 kilometers of range in just ten minutes, with a 10 to 80 percent charge taking around 21 minutes. Thanks to BMW’s in house battery management system, the vehicle also remains compatible with 400 volt DC chargers. AC charging is supported at 11 kilowatts as standard, with an optional upgrade to 22 kilowatts.

Bidirectional charging brings additional flexibility. Vehicle to Load allows the iX3 to power external devices, Vehicle to Home enables it to store and supply energy from home solar systems, and Vehicle to Grid opens the door to feeding energy back into the grid. BMW supports these features with new charging accessories, including a multifunction charger and the BMW Wallbox Professional DC, while BMW Charging offers options for cost optimized and solar optimized home charging.

In North America, the iX3 comes standard with a charging port compatible with the North American Charging Standard, providing access to the Supercharger network. A CCS adapter ensures continued compatibility with other charging providers, keeping long distance travel straightforward.

Driving dynamics are managed by the Heart of Joy, one of four high performance computers in the Neue Klasse electronics architecture. This system oversees drivetrain, braking, energy recuperation, and steering, processing data up to ten times faster than conventional control units. Working with BMW’s in house Dynamic Performance Control software, it delivers precise, predictable responses to every input. Most everyday braking is handled through energy recuperation alone, while a new Soft Stop function provides exceptionally smooth deceleration.

Automated driving and parking functions are handled by a separate high performance computer with twenty times the processing power of the previous generation. Together with BMW Symbiotic Drive, these systems blend driver inputs with intelligent assistance in a way that feels natural rather than intrusive. Features such as adaptive cruise control and lane assistance remain active during light driver inputs, only disengaging when stronger intervention is needed.

With the optional Highway and Motorway Assistant, drivers can travel hands free at speeds of up to 130 kilometers per hour while remaining attentive. The system manages lane guidance, performs automated lane changes with simple glance confirmation, and supports navigation through interchanges and exits. In urban environments, the Highway and City Assistant adds functions such as stopping and restarting at traffic lights, with additional capabilities planned via over the air updates.

Taken as a whole, the BMW iX3 is less about a single headline feature and more about how multiple technologies come together in daily use. It shows how AI, software, electric mobility, and driver assistance can feel cohesive, intuitive, and genuinely useful. At CES 2026, BMW is not just previewing the future. With the iX3, it is putting that future on the road.
