I recently had the opportunity to learn more about Kelsie Watts and her musical path. Kelsie Watts brings a fresh perspective to the pop genre, blending traditional elements with her own unique style. Her ability to move across genres—from classical to pop, R&B to rock—highlights her versatility and showcases her strong vocal talent and storytelling abilities.

Growing up in Lubbock, Kelsie was immersed in music from a young age, thanks to her talented parents who recognized her potential when she sang at the age of two. Her early experiences performing in church and starring in school plays laid the foundation for her musical career. Pursuing her passion, Kelsie attended Belmont University in Nashville, TN, where she studied opera, vocal performance, and commercial music. It was in Nashville that she began crafting her own songs, paving the way for her future success.

In the following Q&A, Kelsie Watts shares insights about her musical journey and creative process.

Question: How would you describe your musical style? How has it evolved over the years?

Kelsie: My music is best described as pop/rock with some soul infused. Meaning if you could combine P!nk, Rihanna, Celine Dion and Christina Aguilera, you would make me! I’ve always known who I am and who I wanted to be, but I’ve felt swayed by others through the years to be someone else. People pushed in the direction of only power ballads or straight pop and even though I love both of those it’s not everything that I am. Over the last year I’ve worked really hard with some amazing writers, producers and my team to make sure the music I’m creating is 1000% who I am, both artistically and sonically.

Question: Are there any specific themes or messages that you aim to convey through your music?

Kelsie: Specific themes are messages that seem to be consistent themes running through my music are self-love, empowerment, healing, and inclusivity.

Question: What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when you first started your music career?

Kelsie: The biggest challenge I faced when I was starting out was simply getting noticed and being seen. Thankfully, there are now platforms like TikTok and Instagram that provide artists with a platform for massive visibility. It doesn’t matter how talented I am or how good my music is if no one sees or hears it! Getting in front of people is half the battle.

Question: Can you share a breakthrough moment in your career that made you realize you were on the right path?

Kelsie: I think most people would assume that it was my time on The Voice, my true breakthrough moment was August last year 2023. After some a little convincing from my team, I started posting videos on TikTok of me singing in my kitchen and they went viral! It gave me the encouragement to continue creating.

Question: How does this upcoming release differ from your previous work in terms of musical style and content?

Kelsie: “After Midnight” is so special to me! It’s the first single I’ve released in over a year and is truly a sound I’m proud of. Previously, and on social media, I’d sing a lot of different styles and genres, which I love, but the music I’ve been writing recently is the truest to who I am. I’m so excited to share it with the world!

Recently, Kelsie released a new single called “After Midnight.” Throughout the interview, she expressed that this song holds a special place in her heart and is something she is truly proud of. Be sure to check out her music below.
